Google Ads

I have just added Google ads to try to compensate a bit of my hosting costs. I have tried to make it as unobstrusive as possible, so it should not annoy. In case it does annoy you, you might want to give Adblock and the automatic Adblock Filterset.G Updater a try.

Update:

I know this site looks like it should be in all browsers except in Internet Explorer. I am trying to fix this, in the meantime please switch to a better browser like Firefox or Opera.

Update

No more ads. they are just too ugly, and traffic is not that large.

Update

Ads now look ok, and the site looks also good if you use an adblocker. I now get filthy rich from my ad revenue of $0.19 per day, wohoo!

How to Find Research Papers Efficiently

Google has a very nice search engine for scientific papers, namely scholar.google.com. The only problem is that a lot of search results contain links to services that are not free. I believe information should be available for free, so this is what I do against this problem:

  1. Search for something, e.g. multi-agent systems.
  2. Whenever you click on a paper that does not lead anywhere except to a site asking you to spend your precious money, ignore this server in your search parameter, like that: -inurl:acm.org.
  3. Repeat until you are happy.

I usually have this ignore list:

-inurl:springerlink -inurl:kluweronline -inurl:ieee.org -inurl:acm.org

Now you get the search results that really matter.

Fxri Maintainer Wanted

Update:

Now that was quick. Thanks to Markus Prinz for taking over maintenance!

Original Message

I am the creator of fxri, which is an FXRuby interface to RI, that supports search-on-typing. Fxri is a small little program, that tries to provide the desired information as fast as possible.

I currently do not have time to do any Ruby related work, so I would be very happy if somebody could take over the maintenance of this little tool. I do not expect it to be much work, maybe a little adaption to new releases of FXRuby from time to time, and creating new gems to download.

So, if anyone is interested and has an account on rubyforge.org, please contact me and I will give you administrator access.

And fear not, i think the code is not so bad. At least I have some comments in it ;-)

Google Videos

I believe Google has a new killer product, namely the videos. I do not have a TV, and am really looking forward to beeing able to watch the series I want to, whenever I want; and I even don’t mind paying a litte fee for that.

Also, being able to integrate the videos into a homepage is an exceptional cool feature. For example, here is a cool presentation of the 100$ Laptop that will go into production in 2006:

So long, and thanks for all the fish.
